The route begins near the coastal city of Bar, just a few meters above sea level, and gradually climbs into the rugged mountain landscape of the Balkans. Along the way the railway winds through dramatic valleys, crosses towering bridges, and disappears repeatedly into tunnels carved through the mountains. This section of the railway is one of the most impressive engineering achievements in southeastern Europe. In the Montenegrin portion alone the line passes through 102 tunnels and crosses 96 bridges while climbing more than 1000 meters in elevation. One of the most spectacular highlights of the route is the Mala Rijeka bridge — one of the highest railway bridges in Europe — suspended high above a deep canyon. The line then continues through alpine terrain toward the mountainous interior of Montenegro.
